Name: Marius Pontmercy.
Canon: Les Miserables.
Original or Alternate Universe: Original.
Canon Point: Marius has been shot and is dragged from battle by Jean Valjean into the sewers of Paris.
Number: 159.

Setting: Wiki Link for the novel.

History: Marius was raised by his grandfather in a rich elite French circle, given up by his father so he would not be disinherited by his grandfather's impressive fortune. He grew up very well-educated, reserved, religious, wealthy, and proper -- and he was destined for a life of great wealth and fortitude until his father died.

Upon the death of his father and learning the truth of why he was given up, Marius abruptly threw himself into researching everything he could about his father, who was a Republican war hero that fought in Waterloo. Previously unable to do anything of the sort while his grandfather was around, he soon invented reasons to leave home in order to study and learn at the school of law he was attending. The more he read about the previous Revolution, the more he began to idolize his father for standing up against tyranny, and he soon moved out of his grandfather's house, refusing any monetary assistance from his family, to live on his own away from the rich.

He then is invited to a meeting of a group of students by his good friend Courfeyrac -- The Friends of the ABC. They are a group of students with revolutionary ideals who are invested in bettering France. Marius agrees to attend, but he's soon tossed out because he and Enjolras, their leader, don't exactly... click very well. In short, there's a lot of arguing and peacocking about and Marius storms back out, because Enjolras is a giant jerkface twit. Even though they clash in ideals, Marius remains pretty close with the majority of the group while he pursues becoming a lawyer -- which he manages, even though he's practically starving in the ghettos of Paris.

It's here that Marius' storyline takes a turn for the Disney.

Our young intrepid hero meets a lovely young woman by the name of Cosette by not really meeting her at all. In fact, he's sort of a stalker about it, and sees Cosette walking with her father Valjean in the gardens that he frequents. Bit by bit, Marius falls in love with her, which doesn't set well with her father, who decides to trick him by leaving a handkerchief with false initials on a bench. When Marius finds the handkerchief, he kisses it, Cosette thinks he's something of a weirdo, and Marius follows them both home. Valjean, who thinks Marius is a spy for Javert or for the French police in general, panics and moves the next day, leaving Marius wondering where his love went.

During the time away from Cosette, Marius meets a great deal of people. He meets Éponine Thénardier, a street rat who is the daughter of the man that saved his father on the battlefield at Waterloo. Though Éponine seems to love Marius very much, Marius himself pays little mind to her save for the fact that Éponine can find out where Cosette has went. In meeting Éponine's family (by eavesdropping), Marius learns that the Thénardiers are going to kill Cosette's father. Marius assists in saving Valjean in order to preserve Cosette's happiness and gets the Thénardiers arrested. He then flees the scene, so he doesn't have to testify against the Thénardiers, not wanting to dishonor their sacrifice to save his father's life.

When Éponine is free from prison, she locates Cosette's address for Marius again, and refuses to accept what little money that he has in payment. Marius goes to Cosette's home and they confess their love for one another. They sneak around and see one another in privacy for about a month and a half until Valjean ruins their lives again by telling Cosette that they are leaving for England, leaving France forever, so that Javert cannot find them. Marius is confident that he can marry Cosette before this happens, though, and returns to his grandfather's house to try and reform their relationship (and, more importantly, ask for permission to marry Cosette). His grandfather offers the super helpful suggestion that Cosette just be his mistress and Marius tells his grandfather to screw off, in a much more eloquent manner. Unfortunately for poor Marius, by the time he gets back to Cosette's home, the house is empty.

He then decides to fight for love of country instead of love of woman.

(Because, well, if Cosette is out of his life, Marius has no reason left to live. Dying as a martyr for the country of France seemed like a pretty good idea at the time.)

During the first attack upon the barricade, the situation is dire. The student revolutionaries are horrendously outmatched and overpowered and the soldiers are beginning to climb above the barricade. A soldier of France levels a musket at Marius, but a young boy grabs the barrel and has himself shot instead. Marius, too caught up in the battle, doesn't immediately notice the sacrifice, instead holding a burning torch near a powder keg. The soldiers threaten him, saying that he would go up in flames with it, but Marius doesn't seem to care and moves the torch even closer. This show of ultimate badassery scares the soldiers into retreating and fleeing, which saves the barricade for another night, and leaves Marius with the individual who got himself shot to save his life.

The boy winds up being Éponine, who gives him a letter from his love, Cosette, before she passes away. The letter informs him of what Marius already knows (that Cosette is going to England) and Marius writes out a letter of his own to be passed to her, telling her that he is going to die at the barricade, for France and for her. The letter is delivered -- but at Marius' canon point, he has no idea whether or not Cosette actually receives it.

The barricade falls and Marius is shot several times. The rest of his friends and comrades die at the barricade, including their leader, Enjolras -- but Marius is rescued by Cosette's father, Valjean, who comes to the barricade to assist in the fight and to ensure Marius' safety. Valjean carries Marius out of the battle through the sewer systems of Paris and only barely manages to get him out alive.

At Marius' canon point, he's being dragged about through the sewers. When he wakes up, he will have to deal with the fact that he survived while all of his friends died.

It's called Les Miserables for a reason.

Personality: Marius is initially portrayed as an individual that has no idea who he is. Adopted by his grandfather, he immediately takes on his grandfather's political viewpoints and studies law. He is one of the few characters in Les Miserables that lives a relatively wealthy live right off the bat and is relatively content during it. He is not a cruel individual, as most of the rich are viewed, but instead is illustrated as an unusually serious young man who takes great care to do as what he is supposed to do. From this first meeting, Marius comes into his own as a living breathing example of what happens when a young man is thrust into the world without much preparation for the consequences -- especially in the struggles of a France that is desperate to find her identity just as much as Marius Pontmercy is.

A major piece of Les Miserables (except for the whole stealing a loaf of bread bit) is Marius Pontmercy's transformation from a relatively ignorant rich young man into a stoic revolutionary that is willing to get himself killed for his friends and for the revolutionary movement. He is initially introduced as a young man who does not feel very much of everything -- but the Marius Pontmercy that you travel with as the novel goes on emerges as one of the most thoughtful and emotive characters in Hugo's piece. Marius is a young man in love who is willing to do everything and anything to be with that woman he loves -- and when Cosette is out of reach, Marius channels that energy into the fight at the barricades, to capture the revolutionary spirit that his father once embraced. He is on a journey of self-discovery; one that ultimately ends in Marius discovering what is important and what is not.

A key component of Marius' personality is captured in his innocence, something that most of the characters in Les Miserables have lost a long time ago -- but Marius, growing up in his bubble of high society and involving himself with the underworld of Paris later in his life, views things in a mostly black and white standpoint, with only the slightest shades of grey. This innocence motivates him (in his pursuant of Cosette, in his fighting of the revolution, and befriending his comrades and students) and it also hinders him, in certain respects. His innocence and general obliviousness hurts a great number of people in the novel, such as Éponine, who is hopelessly in love with him, and Valjean, who Marius treats like a disgusting criminal later on in the novel in order to keep Cosette safe. In the end, Marius is a great guy with good intentions -- but these intentions are sometimes poorly motivated by his own lack of experience with the world. He is the hero, but only to a fault, as he is constantly bolstered by other people in the novel even though Marius is so desperate to be seen on his own.

In addition to his innocent lovestruck nature, Marius can also be extraordinarily brave and selfless. Though he sometimes falls into the stupid teenage lover Romeo trope, he comes into his own in the barricade. Though Marius does not get along very well with Enjolras and he is only very close with certain members of the students, he risks his life to prevent the barricade from falling by holding a burning torch to a powder keg, to scare the French guard into scurrying back into their holes. It's not a bluff, but a certainty -- Marius was willing to die in order to save his comrades and to keep the movement alive.

To sum it up, Marius Pontmercy is innocent, somewhat naive, and sometimes unintentionally cruel. In short, he's pretty much your average human being, except he is so much more than that. He represents the promise that all young people have -- the ability to grow and mature despite being told to do otherwise and, most importantly, Marius has the ability to love. And this, above anything else, drives him most of all.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Marius has no special abilities save for being a good shot and being a licensed attorney... from the 1830s. He is very smart and very well-read and has a great talent for speech, but other than that, he's pretty normal. No superpowers with this lawyer!revolutionary.

Inventory: Marius' locker will contain some legal texts from early 1830s France, a few letters from Cosette (one of them a bit bloody), a tri-colored sash, and a musket.

Appearance: I'm taking the easy way out and using Eddie Redmayne for the PB for Marius, even though he's from the novel and not from the musical or the recent film adaptation. In the novel, Marius is depicted as a rather handsome young man that keeps himself pretty well despite living in the slums of Paris to prove a revolutionary point.

Age: Around 22 years old.

Log Sample:

Death was supposed to be a blanket of peace and solitude; something that Marius did not necessarily want, but had been preparing himself for. He was to die, with his comrades, at the barricade -- a bloody and violent death, with bullets ripping through flesh and a red flag cast across his breast as he fell to the ground. Marius Pontmercy was to be a martyr to the cause and one day, perhaps, Cosette would mourn him.

It did not necessarily happen that way.

He lived.

When he awoke, he was not at the tavern -- he did not have blood in his lungs and a burning metallic taste in his mouth. Instead, he was suspended in liquid and there was a... a thing down his throat and before Marius could scream, the liquid abruptly drained away and he was pulled into consciousness once again.

Was this death?

As Marius stumbled from his prison, his voice raspy as he tried to ask where they were -- they, his friends, his comrades, his brothers in arms -- but he was directed to the tattoo on his arm, to a strange room filled with metallic cabinets -- a world so new and strange and foreign that Marius Pontmercy felt even more alone than he had in the sudden realization that he was going to die.

Except, at least, he was not alone then.

Now, he very much was.

Comms Sample:

[A young man, with dark circles underneath his eyes and a pale color to his cheeks, is on screen. He appears to have changed into clean clothes -- a loose white shirt, slightly opened. Marius doesn't seem to notice or care about the impropriety. He is still trying to wrap his mind around... well, this.

When he speaks, it is with a soft French accent, some letters over-enunciated and some not. He doesn't even know if he's properly working this thing, but this is something Marius must do. His friends (dead, all of them dead) may be here. And, past that, Cosette.

-- he mustn't get his hopes up.]

My name is Marius Pontmercy.

[His tone is faint. This seems so absurdly trivial, compared to the barricade, to what happened -- to losing everything, including France -- ]

I am told that I am aboard something called a 'spaceship', destined to a foreign land that is known to no one but few -- and, more importantly, that I lack any choice in whether or not I can leave.

[ -- ah, right. There is a slight note of fire in his tone as Marius straightens, his tone slightly more commanding.]

Will anyone care to tell me otherwise?
